Questions to Ask When Visiting an Assisted Living Community?

Deciding to move to assisted living is an exciting (and sometimes overwhelming) time. But you’re not just choosing a regular home: an assisted living community has staff, fellow residents, amenities, events, and so much more. Much like finding a new apartment or home, you should mull over plenty of considerations before deciding.

We’ve compiled a list of the most important questions to ask when visiting a prospective assisted living community to help you make the best choice for you or your loved one.

1. What activities and events are regularly offered?

One of the best parts of joining an assisted living community is the community. Top assisted living communities will provide residents with a daily calendar of activities and events. You will find events and activities on our individual property pages, but if you can’t, make sure to ask during your visit.

2. What meal options do you have available?

There’s not much more important than food. Chef-prepared meals are a significant perk of joining an assisted living community. Ask what kinds of meals and menus are available. Better yet, ask if you can have a meal to get a taste of what they’re cooking.

3. What are resident spaces and floor plans like?

This may seem obvious, but it’s essential. You’re picking a new home for yourself, so it needs to fit your lifestyle. Your tour will include a walkthrough of the floor plans you’re interested in. Many of the Generations’ communities also include images of our available floor plans here on our website.

4. How much is rent, and what does it include?

Most people don’t forget to ask this question. As with any living situation, you’ll need to know how much it costs. Equally important is to ask what all is included with the rent price. Some communities require you to pay separately for additional features and amenities, while others have everything at the cost of the rent.

5. What public spaces and amenities are available?

Whether you’re joining an activity or just enjoying some time away from your apartment, you’ll spend much of your time in the community’s public spaces. Your visit to a community will inevitably show off some of the public areas, but make sure to ask to see as many as you can.

6. How easy is it to access medical care?

We don’t always want to think about it, but medical emergencies do happen. Make sure to confirm with the staff on your visit that all residents have access to an emergency call system in the event of a medical incident.

7. When and how often can family visit?

Whether you’re visiting a community as a potential resident, family member, or friend of a potential resident, you’ll want to know how easy it is for family members to visit. In most cases, family members are welcome to visit as often as they want. There may be restrictions on visitors in extreme situations (such as the recent COVID-19 pandemic), but these restrictions are (hopefully) rare.

8. Ask as many questions as you can

This list is a collection of some of the most important questions to ask when visiting assisted living communities, but there are many more. If you have any questions for us here at Generations, don’t hesitate to contact us online or schedule a tour.
