Planning For a Smooth Transition
Make sure you know the dimensions of your space and have a plan for how it compares to your current space. You’ll likely be downsizing, so get a good idea of what you can realistically store and bring to your new home. Creating a plan with your moving team, be they family, friends, or professional movers, is crucial. Make a floor-plan to help organize the final state of your new space. Now it’s time to determine what to keep and what to donate, dispose of, or leave with loved ones. Some tools that can make this process easier include color coding boxes, for example; Green=Keep, Yellow=Donate, Red=Dispose. This is also the time to check your current home to both clean it out and see if the building is in need of any repairs.
When ready to move, hiring a Moving Manager is the easiest option, but you can also rent a moving company van. Before doing either, make sure they are a reputable company and get hard estimates (in writing) to ensure your move is as smooth as possible. On move-in day, pack as if you were preparing for a short trip, and include a box of essential items you’ll need in the immediate 24 hours after moving in. Put this box on the moving truck last, as it will be the first box you unpack. Remain in contact with both loved ones and your key contacts like physicians, banks, etc. to make sure they know your change in address. Filing a change of address with the US postal service is also important.
